Join Chaska Hexe Fey and Cale Passmore for a candid fireside chat as they weave together lessons learned from technologies of selfhood, spanning domains of movement, language, art, culture, and knowledge work. Hexe and Cale and will discuss how embodiment, design, research, and culture are brought together in spaces of digital play: how these practices inform their sense of self and how their sense of self informs their practices. From a necessarily interdisciplinary lens, Hexe will share moments of insight and breakthroughs in design, interactive digital storytelling, movement practices, indigenous technology ethics, and avant garde art.

Transitioning From Academia to Industry Game User Research (a Primer)
User research in the video game industry is very different from academic research and while it’s becoming trendy, it can sometimes be hard for applicants outside of the game industry to secure a job as a game user researcher. This masterclass aims to explain how to transition from academia to such a role: the similarities between academia and the game industry, the differences, and what to be aware of when considering such a career change. As former director of UX at Epic Games (Fortnite), Celia Hodent will explain what to expect, give examples of how game user researchers work on a game like Fortnite, and will provide tips on how to enter the game industry and be successful.

Kishonna Gray is currently an Associate Professor in Writing, Rhetoric, and Digital Studies at the University of Kentucky. Her scholarship is influenced by her interdisciplinary training and grounded in critical race theory and feminist approaches to knowledge production. She interrogates the impact that technology has on culture and how Black users, in particular, influence the creation of technological products and the dissemination of digital artifacts. While her extensive publication record explores how technology disparately impacts women and people of color, her current research interrogates the possibilities and potentials of what that technology can afford Black communities who are traditionally excluded from public spaces, including digital ones.

Designing Informative Studies
The goal of data collection is to provide an informative answer to a research question. When analyzing data using frequentist statistics researchers should design studies that have a high probability of yielding a correct conclusion. This is often a challenge given uncertainty about the effects under investigation. In this masterclass I will explain how to design efficient and reliable studies that provide informative answers. I will discuss how to justify sample sizes by thinking about the smallest effect size of interest in your research area, and how to collect data efficiently using sequential analyses.
