Companion Submission Overview & Guidelines

In this page, you will find the necessary information for submitting to Companion Proceedings tracks. The page provides guidance on choosing the appropriate track to submit your work and an overview of the companion proceedings submission guidelines, including the correct template, page limits, required supplementary material(s) and any additional submission requirements.

Which Track You Should Submit Your Work To

CHI PLAY 2025 hosts six different Companion Proceedings tracks. A brief explanation of each track is below and you can find more information on the separate call for papers page of each track:

Work in Progress: Work in Progress submissions report on original yet incomplete work that seeks to advance our current knowledge in games and play through innovative or thought-provoking ideas.

Perspectives of Play: Perspectives on Play (PoP) is an innovative track at CHI PLAY aimed at quickly communicating new ideas, reflections, or provocations within and beyond research. The track aims to spark engagement within the CHI PLAY community and adjacent spaces, inviting input from industry, academia, the indie world, and anyone with a stake in games research.

Student Game Design Competition: The CHI PLAY Student Game Design Competition showcases student work that are interactive play systems and designs. We are seeking games that push the boundaries of game design, showcasing novel and transformative approaches to gameplay that  impact political, societal, artistic, educational, and other dimensions.

Interactivity: The Interactivity track showcases work in a hands-on setting that gives conference attendees the opportunity to explore and discuss their systems.

Connections: The Connections track invites CHI PLAY community members to propose and host an event during the CHI PLAY 2025 conference. We welcome proposals for engaging and interactive events, such as Courses, Panels, Fireside chats, Workshops, and more!

Doctoral Consortium: The CHI PLAY 2025 Doctoral Consortium provides an opportunity for doctoral students to explore and develop their research interests. We invite PhD students who feel they will benefit from feedback from experts in the field on their dissertation work to apply for this unique opportunity.

Please see the below diagram that can further help you decide the track you want to choose:

Companion Submission Guidelines

CHI PLAY 2025 uses one single template format for submission to the “Companion Proceedings” tracks. Submissions should use the ACM Journals Primary Templates. Detailed instructions on formatting can be found at http://www.acm.org/publications/authors/submissions.

Accepted submissions are published in the CHI PLAY 2025 Companion Proceedings and ACM Digital Library.

Submissions must be made using the Precision Conference System (PCS). The deadline for all submissions is June 4th, 2025, 23:59 AoE.

Submissions for all Companion Proceedings Tracks (Works-in-Progress, Perspectives on Play, Student Game Design Competition, Interactivity, Connections, and Doctoral Consortium) should be formatted as follows:

  • ACM Journals Primary Template (references not included), single-column manuscript style.
  • Authors should submit manuscripts for review in a single-column format, which is available for Word and LaTeX (use the “manuscript” call to create a single-column format, rather than “acmsmall”). If you are using the ACM LaTeX Overleaf template, please select the “ACM Journals Primary Template“, not the “ACM Conference Proceedings Primary Article Template”
