Work-in-Progress

Are you sure this is right track to submit? All Companion Proceedings tracks in CHI PLAY share the same deadline and similar formats. However, all tracks are designed for specific types of contribution and we understand that sometimes it can be confusing to choose which track to submit to. If you are not sure if a track is the right track to submit, please see Companion Submission Overview & Guidelines for a detailed explanation of submission types and topics for different tracks and overall guidelines regarding submissions to companion proceedings.

Up to 8 pages in ACM Journals Primary Template, single-column manuscript style.

August 6, 2025Camera Ready Deadline

Work in Progress (WIP) contributions provide a unique opportunity for authors to present reports on original yet incomplete work that seeks to advance our current knowledge in games and play through innovative or thought-provoking ideas. We encourage submissions describing late-breaking advances and in-progress reports from ongoing research. Submissions are evaluated on their originality, innovation, and contribution to the diversity of the conference program.

Examples include:

  • Original and innovative concepts, technologies, or techniques that evidently support or inform research
  • Qualitative or quantitative studies showing preliminary results
  • “Prequels” or “Sequels”  that motivate or stimulate novel conversations or future work
  • Theoretical or methodological contributions that provoke disciplinary conversations

Work in Progress papers are archived in the ACM Digital Library in the CHI PLAY 2025 Companion Proceedings.

SUBMISSION FORMAT

  • Up to 8 pages in ACM Journals Primary Template, single-column manuscript style (excluding references)
  • Detailed instructions on formatting and submission can be found at Companion Proceedings Submission Guidelines
  • Important: Please note that Work in Progress submissions are anonymous. Submissions must have authors’ names and affiliations removed, and avoid obvious identifying statements. Any grant information that identifies the author(s) and their institution should be removed as well. Please check in particular the front page, headers and footers, and the Acknowledgement section. Also, check the meta information in papers prepared using Word. Citations to authors’ own relevant work should be done without identifying the authors. For example, “Prior work by [authors]” instead of “In our prior work.” If you submit any supplementary materials (e.g., videos, data), please also check those for any identifying information.
  • Important change in this year: Work-in-Progress submissions are now required to fill a text field titled “Relevance as a Work-in-Progress” during the submission process in PCS. In this text, authors must provide a clear justification for how the submitted work aligns with the scope of the track. In doing so, authors should succinctly address how the submitted work informs next steps within an ongoing or planned research project, or how it may foster novel discussion within the relevant community. As always, the manuscript itself should also discuss the next steps or open questions, e.g., in the form of a “future work” section.

REVIEW PROCESS

Work in Progress (WIP) submissions will be peer-reviewed and evaluated based on originality, innovation, and contribution to conference program diversity. To facilitate a fair reviewing process, submissions must be made anonymous.

UPON ACCEPTANCE

Authors will have three weeks to prepare a camera-ready (non-anonymous) version of the paper incorporating the feedback provided by reviewers as well as a 3 minute pre-recorded video of their presentation. The submitted video must be no longer than 3 minutes and briefly describe the authors’ work. Please see the Video Guidelines for technical requirements. Further, in-person authors will be required to prepare a poster for presentation at the conference.

DURING THE CONFERENCE

Work-in-Progress submissions are presented as posters (in-person) or videos (virtual) at the conference. Attendees are encouraged to interact and discuss with the authors during dedicated sessions and throughout the conference. We are currently discussing changes to the presentation formats, e.g., guided focus sessions, that help to spark discussions between presenters and attendees and lead to fruitful feedback that helps authors in continuing to work on their projects. We will share more details on these changes closer to the conference. If your work involves a demonstration of a piece of technology or experience you may also opt to demonstrate it during the interactivity exhibition at the conference.

AFTER THE CONFERENCE

Work in Progress papers and the pre-recorded videos will be archived in the ACM Digital Library in the CHI PLAY 2025 Companion Proceedings.
